Ontario to ban 'old' lightbulbs - "The Ontario government said Wednesday it plans to ban the current bulbs and what it calls other inefficient lighting technologies by 2012 in an effort to reduce the province's electricity consumption and lower the greenhouse gases that cause global warming." I just installed the new CFL lightbulbs for the first time the other day.

My advice is to buy the "soft white" ones from GE and stay away from any "natural white" ones which can be very unpleasant. The "soft white" ones give a similar orange colour like the old fashined light bulbs. Easier on the eyes, I think.

Also, be sure they aren't broken when you buy them. A lot were already cracked in their packages when I picked them off the shelves.

I haven't had much luck using CFLs on dimmers. It gives a buzzing sound coming from the dimmer switch, and the lights flicker when the dimmer is set medium or low. Perhaps I was using the wrong wattage. More likely, dimmers just aren't made for CFLs, and this room will have to stick with regular bulbs until 2012. I'll do more testing though. I'd really like to abandon the old bulbs everywhere.

On a side note, this may not benifit anyone, buy CFLs produce less heat (I think) which is why I don't burn my hand when unscrewing CFLs like I do with regular bulbs (even though they were off for 5 minutes).
